Lanterns brought over with the introduction of Buddhism, many came to be made from the Nara period. Many monks use was to be used as a votive light of the shrine and throughout the Heian period.
When you came to Japan, you can see the various lanterns in the gardens of traditional Japanese houses and shrines.
